2005 Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc Our La Playa Late Harvest dessert wine is made from Sauvignon Blanc, one of the varietals used to make the great Sauternes of France. The unlikely key to these luscious wines is a beneficial fungus, Botrytis cinerea, that sometimes infects the grape skins late in the season when climatic conditions are just right. The grapes are left on the vines to, well, rot, and are carefully handpicked at the peak (so to speak) of their rottenness. It sounds bizarre, but the results are spectacular. By causing the grapes to shrivel and lose most of their water content, the mold, (which is called noble rot) greatly concentrates the sugars and induces desirable chemical changes. The grapes look awful, but the wines are divine - intensely sweet and concentrated, with a honeyed character that thrills without cloying. This wine is ready to drink immediately but is capable of extremely long bottle aging. Best served chilled, it is a wonderful accompaniment to sweet fruits and desserts. |

2005 Loud River Roaring Red From the foothills of an Andean volcano, the Tinguiririca River (translated "Loud River") flows across Chile to the Pacific Ocean. Overlooking the river, at the western end of the fertile Colchagua Valley, lies Viña La Playa. In the spring, when the mountain snow begins to melt, the placid stream becomes a raging, roaring torrent. Loud River is an equally powerful wine, a full-bodied blend of Petit Verdot, Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon. With its deep, dark color and intense, robust flavor, it's particularly great with barbequed meats and spicy foods. And remember: most red wines taste best with food and when slightly chilled - to about 60°F, but not much lower. |
