Background — Viña La Playa S.A.

The vineyards of Viña La Playa occupy some of the Colchagua Valley's most desirable acreage, on the western shores of Chile's Tinguiririca River. With near-perfect growing conditions, Colchagua has been described as "The Next Napa" (Wine Enthusiast, March 2002) as "arguably Chile's premier opportunity for world-class wine production" (Wine Spectator, April 30, 2002), and as "2005 Wine Region of the Year," yeilding "some of the most compelling wines in the world" (Wine Enthusiast, 2005).

The La Playa brand, named for Chile's magnificent Pacific coastline, was launched in 1989 by the Axelsen family of Marin and Napa Counties in California. (The Axelsens own Cabernet Corporation in Novato, California, a firm of international wine merchants and the exclusive importer and distributor of La Playa wines in the United States.)

Viña La Playa S.A. of Chile is a partnership between the Axelsens and two promient Chilean winemaking legends: the Sutil and Errázuriz families. The winery encompasses 597 acres of prime property in the Colchagua Valley, where its vineyards enjoy a unique microclimate that fosters the growth of premium wine grapes.

In 2002, Viña La Playa expanded to include a $10 million, large-capacity winery with state-of-the-art American, French, and Italian technology.

The elegant, four-star Viña La Playa Winery & Hotel celebrated its grand opening in 2004. This, the first winery-based hotel in Chile, invites guests to sleep under the same roof as Viña La Playa's premium wines.
